To play air hockey, you need a table, two paddles, a puck, and of course somebody to play the game with. Once you have everything you need, you can start the game. An air hockey table is a table that has a large, smooth playing surface. The reason the surface has to be smooth is that pucks need to be able to slide on it. The main objective of the game is to score as many goals as possible. In order to increase play speed, most tables have some tiny holes in them with the purpose of reducing friction. Also, a table needs to meet special requirements to be considered acceptable for tournaments.

Not every type of a table is good enough for a tournament. As a matter of fact, the only type of table that are approved for tournaments are 8-foot tables manufactured by Dynamo. The organization that approves or disapproves hockey tables is the United States Air-Table-Hockey Association.
